Kirtan is simply meditation, a celebration of sound, a form of Bhakti yoga, yoga of devotion. Kirtan has roots in India, and many of the songs are sung in Sanskrit. Some are also in Gurmukhi or Punjabi, the language of the Sikhs. The ancient chants contain powerful renewing & transformative energy that help us reconnect with the Divinity, the Life Force that resides within each of us. The intent of singing mantra is to harness the energy of the mind to a single point. It refines intuition and life force energy, and calms the ‘monkey mind’.
You do not need to be a professional singer, if you can make sound, you can chant! At a kirtan concert all voices merge together to become One Harmonious Sound.
We will end our experience with the healing frequencies of the Gong which will move the mind into a meditative state, Alpha to Theta state of mind. Alpha brainwave state is achieved very quickly and is followed by the Theta brainwave state. Daydreaming, imagination and associative thinking are all part of alpha brainwave activity. Alpha waves are present in states of relaxation. Theta brainwave frequencies are most often where the gongs will take you. You will most likely enter a dreamlike, deep meditative state. Some people might enter the Delta brainwave state (deep sleep frequency). Theta brainwave is a good state of consciousness to be in for deep meditation to occur.
“Kirtan is a means of finding our way back to the core of our Being, to our heart, and to our connection with each other.” ~Ragani
