“I play my music at 432Hz. It is said that this tuning corresponds to the frequency of the universe. I have found that playing in this tuning is more relaxing to myself and my listeners because the music is warmer and more calming to the nervous system.
I play my composed music in Sound Bath/Healing Meditation and Yin Yoga Sessions. The responses I have received from instructors and those attending classes are positive and wanting me to return for more, so continuing on into solo concerts has been a natural progression.”
Bio: Carlton is a Spokane-based guitarist and craftsman, but his love for guitar began when he was a small boy growing up on a military base in Hawai’i. Hawai’ian music was an early influence when he first began to learn the guitar, and Hawai’ian slack-key guitar is one of the styles of music he will perform.
“Slack key” simply means that the standard guitar tuning has been altered to create an open chord making for lots of open strings being played. Hawai’ian families had their own, closely-guarded tunings that gave their family renditions their particular character and beauty.
Fast forward a few years, and Carlton is studying for a degree in Guitar Performance at Eastern Oregon College in La Grande, which he earned. He added jazz, classical and contemporary pieces to his repertoire. He has now been performing on guitar throughout the Pacific Northwest and also internationally, for more than 30 years.
I’m not sure when Carlton decided to build guitars, but it seems like a natural outgrowth of his love for his instrument, and his fascination with tone. Now, in addition to performing, Carlton builds beautiful classical guitars of his own design.
The classical guitar preceded the steel-string guitar which has become the standard for country music and rock, blues, etc. The classical guitar was originally strung with gut, now it has nylon for strings 1,2 and 3, and wound strings for 4,5, and 6. The fretboard is slightly wider, and the body tends to be deeper than the steel-string guitar. The instrument is from Spain, and flamenco is the style of music the Spaniards developed for guitar. Carlton plays flamenco style, with intricate picking and advanced right hand techniques for percussive effects.

A 2.5 hour workshop: 30 minutes of Ayurvedic discussion and 2 hours of Forrest Yoga asana practice.
This Forrest Yoga and Ayurveda inspired workshop will focus on creating a sense of playful ease and surrender, on and off the mat.
According to Ayurveda, if too much pitta dosha (summer) accumulates in the body it can eventually result in imbalances related to the excess heat and fire. Skin breakouts, feeling irritable and displaying a fiery temper is more about out of balance pitta than it is about your character flaws. You can prevent this stuff.
In the discussion portion of this workshop you’ll be introduced to simple methods for getting ahead of summer’s pitfalls. Learn how to change up your yoga practice, daily rhythm and food to create a shift in physiology & attitude that leads to inner coolness and grace.
The two hour asana session is suitable for all levels of ability and interest. You’ll focus on embodying breath and feeling while working within the poses. You’ll make space from the inside out with side and back body opening plus, you’ll get to have a little arm balance play.
Printed take home knowledge included! You’ll get a copy of the workshop pose sequence, plus a tip sheet with easy reference for counteracting the negative aspects of pitta out of balance.
