Beginning Yoga

"A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." – Confucius

Welcome. Like most things worth pursuing, yoga is a process of practice and learning that affects each of us differently. We all come to yoga from different experiences that have shaped who we are up to this point, and though you may be practicing and learning together, ultimately yoga leads you back to a deeper relationship with your truest self. In most styles of yoga the jumping off point is bringing the body back into balance, learning to breath and developing focus.

"How poor they are that have not patience! What wound did ever heal but by degrees?" - William Shakespeare

As the only Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga school in Spokane, here at the Shala we know that people come to yoga for many reasons; lower back pain, healing from an injury, looking to improve physical fitness, stress relief are to name a few. We also know that some find that yoga helps them to relax while others find that yoga is energizing and invigorating.

Did you know that recent studies have shown that among other things yoga can:

  • reduce insomnia
  • reduce cortisol levels
(high cortisol levels in the brain are caused by stress)
  • provide allergy and asthma symptom relief
  • lower blood pressure
  • increase overall sense of well being
  • reduce muscular tension and anxiety
  • increase strength and flexibility
  • slow overall aging process

So, step one is getting yourself to that jumping off point. It starts with figuring out which classes, and teachers will fit your needs, your goals, and your schedule. We offer several ways to get started but the one we most highly recommend is our Yoga 101 5 week long introduction to yoga.

It is an honor for us to assist you in this new endeavor.

Namaste.
